Pan-African Mining Summit Begins In Abuja

Seven African countries will today gather in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for this year's African mining Partnership  (AMP) Mid-Term Review from August 23 to 25, 2007.

The meeting is designed to highlight presentations on beneficiation, small-scale mining, environment, sustainable development, promoting foreign investment and indigenous local participation in mining ventures.   Representatives of the committee comprise of Nigeria for the West, Egypt for the North, Republic of Congo representing Central, Namibia for South and Ethiopia for the East.   In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary, Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Clinton Oni, the three- day event is entitled, "Optimising African Mineral Potentials for Peace and Prosperity".  The objective, however, is to function in line with the African Union mining policy to harness and harmonise development efforts in the continent.  

Ghana is chairing the committee and the vice chairman is Mali.   The summit will have in attendance African ministers saddled with minerals and mining policy and administration with a preceding meeting of the officials in the first two days.   The mid-term meeting is an annual event to review work adopted in the general meeting of the African Mining Partnership held prior to INDABA conference known as the most prominent mining conference in Cape Town, South Africa every February.
